Can I see if a car was at a salvage auction before?

Yes. If the VIN has ever appeared on Copart or IAAI, carpybara surfaces the full auction history: every sale date, lot number, final bid, odometer at sale, seller and whether it sold or was re-listed. This is the same 'repeat auction' pattern that reveals repair-flip scams.

Does it work for European, Japanese, Korean or Chinese VINs?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the decoder accepts any valid 17-character VIN. World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) codes for Europe (W…, S…, V…), Japan (J…), Korea (K…), China (L…), etc. are all handled. NHTSA recalls and NCAP ratings are US-market specific, but make/model/year decoding is universal.

Can I check if a car has flood or salvage history by VIN?

Where a VIN has auction records in our index, we show the title document used at each sale (e.g. 'Cert of title — salvage flood', 'Rebuilt title', 'Clean title'). If a vehicle ever passed through Copart or IAAI with a flood, fire, theft-recovery or salvage title, that information surfaces in the report.

Indirectly, yes. The auction history lists the odometer reading at every previous sale. If a car showed 150,000 miles in 2023 and 90,000 miles when re-listed in 2025, that odometer regression is visible in the timeline — a classic mileage-rollback red flag.

carpybara doesn't query law-enforcement theft databases (NICB, NCIC). For a formal theft check run the VIN through NICB's free VINCheck tool. carpybara's auction history and title-document view can still surface suspicious patterns (e.g. a car listed as 'Theft/Recovered' at a prior auction).
